 Riders to the Sea is a tragic play about a poor fishing family on an Irish island. Maurya, the mother, has already lost her husband, father-in-law, and four sons to the sea. At the start of the play, her daughters hear that a dead body, possibly their missing brother Michael, has been found. Meanwhile, their youngest brother Bartley prepares to go to the mainland to sell a horse. Maurya begs him not to go, fearing the sea will take him too, but he leaves anyway.

Maurya later sees Michael’s ghost and realizes Bartley is in danger. Soon, villagers bring Bartley’s dead body—he drowned after falling off his horse into the sea. Now, Maurya has lost all her sons. In the end, she accepts her fate calmly, saying no one can live forever.

The play shows how powerful fate and nature are, and how humans must endure their suffering with strength and peace.

SUMMARY OF THE PLAY "RIDERS TO THE SEA" 

The play 'Riders to the Sea' is set in a small kitchen on one of the Aran Islands, off the west coast of Ireland. It starts with Cathleen, a young woman, doing housework. Her younger sister Nora comes in, carrying a small bundle wrapped in cloth. Their mother, Maurya, is resting in the next room. Nora says the bundle may contain clothes belonging to their missing brother Michael, who went to sea and never returned. They are worried because a storm is coming, and their only remaining brother, Bartley, still plans to sail that day. They choose not to open the bundle yet, as they fear their mother will be upset if she sees it.

Before Maurya enters the room, Cathleen hides the bundle. Maurya asks where Bartley is, believing he won’t leave because of the bad weather. But Bartley soon arrives, determined to go sell a horse on the mainland. Maurya begs him to stay, but he refuses. Before leaving, Bartley gives instructions about caring for the animals in his absence, since Michael is gone and no other man is left to help. এরপর মরিয়া ঘরে এসে জানতে চান, বার্টলি কোথায়। তিনি মনে করেন, সাগরের ঝড় দেখে বার্টলি আর যাবে না। কিন্তু বার্টলি এসে জানায়, সে ঘোড়া বিক্রি করতে মূল ভূখণ্ডে যাচ্ছে। মা অনেক অনুরোধ করলেও সে শোনে না। যাওয়ার আগে সে বলে যায়, তার অনুপস্থিতিতে বাড়ির কাজ কিভাবে সামলাতে হবে। মরিয়া খুব দুশ্চিন্তায় পড়েন, আর বলেন, আজ রাতের মধ্যেই তাঁর কোনো ছেলে বেঁচে থাকবে না। তখন ক্যাথলিন খেয়াল করে, তারা বার্টলির সঙ্গে রুটি পাঠাতে ভুলে গেছে। সে মরিয়াকে বলেন, রুটি আর আশীর্বাদ দিয়ে বার্টলিকে বিদায় জানাতে যেন তিনি চলে যান।

মরিয়া বাইরে গেলে, ক্যাথলিন ও নোরা পুঁটলি খুলে দেখে সত্যিই তা মাইকেলের কাপড়। তারা বুঝতে পারে, সে মারা গেছে। এরপর মরিয়া চুপচাপ ফিরে আসে, হাতে রুটি নিয়েই। তিনি কথা বলতে পারছিলেন না। পরে কেঁদে ওঠেন এবং বলেন, তিনি দেখেছেন বার্টলির পেছনে মাইকেলের আত্মা হাঁটছে। সবাই ধরে নেয়, এটা একটা অশুভ সংকেত।
