What is Degree of Comparison? Understand Degree of Comparison - Positive, Comparative And Superlative Degree: 

Degree of Comparison হল Adjective-র একটি form যা একই গুণের কোনো ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে অন্যের সাথে তুলনা করতে ব্যবহৃত হয়। Degrees of comparison -র তিনটি ডিগ্রী রয়েছে: positive, comparative, and superlative. 

Positive Degree একটি একক গুণ বর্ণনা করে (যেমন, "strong").  

eg. Ram is a strong boy. 

or, Ram is as strong as any other boy.

Comparative Degree দুটি ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর মধ্যে তুলনা করে (যেমন, "stronger"), 

eg. Ram is stronger than Rahim.

Superlative Degree তিনটি বা ততোধিক ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর মধ্যে বা সবার মধ্যে তুলনা করে (যেমন, "strongest")

eg. Ram is the strongest.

Ram is as strong as any other boy.

Degrees of Comparison ভীষণ সোজা। মনে রাখতে হয় শুধু sentence structure আর কোন ক্ষেত্রে কী পরিবর্তন হয়।

• Positive Degree তে Adjective সব সময় দুটো "as" এর মাঝখানে থাকে।

e.g. Sunny is as tall as his brother.

sentence structure: Subject + Verb + as + Adjective Positive Form + as + extra/rest of the part.

• Comparative Degree তে Adjective এর Comparative form হয় আর তার পাশে অবশ্যই "than" বসে। উল্লেখ্য : "than" আর "then" আলাদা জিনিস। Comparative-এ "than" হয়, যার মানে হল "থেকে", যেখানে "then" মানে "তখন"। ভুল করলে চলবে না!

e.g. Apple is tastier than jackfruit. (Taste → Tastier)

sentence structure: Subject + Verb + Adjective Comparative Form + than + extra/rest of the part.

• Superlative Degree তে Adjective এর Superlative form হয় আর তার আগে "the" অবশ্যই বসবে। 

e.g. Ranji is the best player of the team. (Good → Better → Best)

sentence structure: Subject + Verb + the+ Adjective Superlative Form + extra/rest of the part.

Adjective (বিশেষণ) যেহেতু noun (বিশেষ্য) এবং pronoun(সর্বনাম)কে যোগ্য করে, তাই noun মূলত Adjective-র পাশে বসে। কিন্তু এটা বোঝার জন্য খুব জটিল করার দরকার নেই। 

এই sentence structure থেকেই বোঝা যায় কোনটা কোন sentence। Sentence এ দুটো "as" আছে? ওহ, তার মানে positive, "than" আছে ? তার মানে comparative । "most" আছে ? বা adjective এর সাথে "-est" আছে শেষে ? নিঃসন্দেহে superlative । এইভাবে ~ easy right?

Adjective গুলি positive, comparative, and superlative-এ কেমন পরিবর্তন হয় তার List যে কোনো grammar বইয়ে পাওয়া যাবে। 

সাধারণ নিয়ম হল : 

Positive + er = comparative 

Positive + est = superlative 

যেমন,

tall + er = taller

tall + est = tallest

wise + er = wiser 

wise + est = wisest 

কিছু অন্যরকম নিয়ম আছে, যেটা easy কিন্তু easier নয়, simple কিন্তু simpler নয়। 

Notice the differences ?

Type 1: (consonant becomes double then "er" or "est" get added)

big → bigger  → biggest

hot  → hotter  → hottest

red  → redder  → reddest

Type 2: ("y" becomes →  "i" then "er" or "est" get added)

happy  → happier  → happiest

easy  → easier  → easiest

lazy  → lazier  → laziest

busy  → busier  → busiest

Type 3: (add "r" and "st" only)

large  → larger  → largest 

simple  → simpler  → simplest

fine → finer → finest

আর যদি adjective টি এক এর থেকে বেশি syllable এর হয়, তাহলে comparative-এ more আর superlative-এ most বসে adjective-এর আগে। 

Syllable হল: a unit of pronunciation having one vowel sound, with or without surrounding consonants, forming the whole or a part of a word. 

অর্থাৎ একটি word বা word-এর যতটুকু এক বারে উচ্চারণ করা যায়, তাকে বলে syllable. একটি syllable-এ একটিই vowel sound থাকে, কারণ vowel ছাড়া শব্দ উচ্চারণ করা যায় না। এগুলো এতো ছোট বেলায় পড়ান হয়, যে মনে থাকে না। 

তাহলে, দাঁড়ালো এই যে, যে adjective গুলো ১-syllable এর, অর্থাৎ tall, strong, big, large, nice, long. তার সাথে comparative-এর সময় "er" যুক্ত হয়। অর্থাৎ : taller, stronger, bigger, larger, nicer, longer. 

আর, superlative-এর সময় "est" যুক্ত হয়। অর্থাৎ : tallest, strongest, biggest, largest, nicest, longest. 

যে adjective গুলো ১-এর থেকে বেশি syllable-এর, অর্থাৎ beautiful, wonderful, useful তাদের ক্ষেত্রে adjective-এর আগে "more" আর "less" বসে। 

more beautiful - বেশি সুন্দর 

less beautiful - কম সুন্দর 

আর, superlative degree-র ক্ষেত্রে,  adjective-এর আগে "most" বা "least" বসে। 

most beautiful - সবথেকে সুন্দর 

least beautiful - সবথেকে কম সুন্দর 

অবশ্যই সব কিছুর ব্যতিক্রম আছে। তাই কিছু এরকম পরিবর্তনও দেখা যায়,

good → better → best 

bad → worse → worst 

Well →  Better → Best. 

Far → Farther/Further → Farthest/Furthest.

Much/Many → More → Most 

Little → Less → Least  

Degree of Comparison Rules - How to Change from Positive to Comparative to Superlative?

এবার দেখা যাক Sentence -এ কী পরিবর্তন হয় :

NUMBER 1: 

Superlative Degree : 

Iron is the most useful metal. 

Comparative Degree:

Iron is more useful than any other metal.

Positive Degree:

No other metal is as useful as Iron.

NUMBER 2 : 

Superlative Degree : 

Kolkata is one of the largest cities in India,

Comparative Degree : 

Kolkata is larger than most other cities in India.

Positive Degree:

Very Few cities in India are as large as Kolkata.

1. Superlative-এ "the" বসবেই, কিন্তু অন্য form গুলোতে "the" বসে না, তাই positive বা comparative এ  "the" উঠে যায়। নিয়ম অনুযায়ী comparative এ "than" আর positive-এ দুটো "as" বসে গেল। 

2. Superlative degree বা Comparative degree তে Subject বা যে ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু সম্পর্কে বলা হচ্ছে সে আগে বসে, Positive degree-তে সেটা বসে একদম শেষে। 

3. যখন Superlative Degree তে adjective আগে শুধু "the" থাকে, তখন comparative "any other" বসে, আর positive শুরু হয় "No Other" দিয়ে। 

যখন Superlative Degree তে adjective আগে "one of the" থাকে, তখন comparative "most other" বসে, আর positive শুরু হয় "Very few" দিয়ে। 

কারণ the largest মানে সব থেকে বৃহৎ, সেখানে one of the largest মানে অনেক গুলোর মতো এটাও বৃহৎ। আর সেই জন্যই one of the থাকলে সব Superlative, comparative, positive সব জায়গাতেই plural হয়। 

এই দুটো type-এ সব কিছু। এটুকু মনে রাখলে Degree of Comparison কখনও ভুল হবে না। 

আর একটা special কেস আছে, যেটার superlative form-এ হয় না। সেটা বলি:

The fox is cleverer than the dog. 

এটা comparative degree-তে আছে। কেন ? কারণ, "cleverer" আছে, "than" আছে, দুটো animal-এর মধ্যে তুলনা আছে। 

আর যেহেতু এখানে দুটো নির্দিষ্ট animal-এর মধ্যে তুলনা আছে, তাই এটার superlative form হবে না। Superlative আরও বেশি জিনিসের মধ্যে তুলনা বোঝায়। 

তাহলে, The fox is cleverer than the dog. এর মানে হল fox বা শিয়াল হল dog বা কুকুরের থেকে বেশি চালাক। 

positive-এ "as" মানে হলো "সমান বা এরই মতো" । তো, আমরা যদি লিখি, The dog is as clever as the fox. - এর মানে দাঁড়ায় কুকুর শিয়ালের মতোই বুদ্ধিমান, যেটা মানে পরিবর্তন করে ফেলে। তাই আমাদের আনতে হবে "not"

The dog is not as clever as the fox. 

ব্যাস, সমস্যার সমাধান ।

positive এর জন্য দুটো "as" থাকল, "clever" adjective বসলো, sentence-এর মানে পরিবর্তনও হল না। 

Degree of Comparison EXAMPLES:

1 Mr Bose is as rich as Mr Dutta. (Positive)

- Mr Dutta is not richer than Mr Bose. (Comparative)

2. The cake is not as healthy as bread. (Positive)

- The cake is healthier than the bread. (Comparative)

3. He is the best striker in the world. (Superlative)

- He is better than any other striker in the world. (Comparative)

- No other striker in the world is so good as Robinho. (Positive)

4. Netaji is one of the greatest leaders of India. (Superlative)

- Netaji is greater than most other leaders of India. (Comparative)

- Very few leaders of India is as great as Netaji. (Positive)

5. Some singers are as great as Manna Dey. (Positive)

- Manna Dey is not greater than some other singers. (Comparative)

- Manna Dey is not the greatest of all singers. (Superlative)

6. The Victoria Memorial Hall is less magnificent than the Taj Mahal. (Comparative) 

- The Victoria Memorial Hall is not as magnificent as the Taj Mahal. (Positive)

Hey Check This:

This is the most difficult math problem I've ever seen. (Superlative)

• This is more difficult than any other math problem I've ever seen. (comparative)
• I have never seen any other math problem more difficult than this. (comparative)

and again,

• No other math problem that I've ever seen is as difficult as this. (Positive)
• I've never seen any math problem as difficult as this. (Positive)

Grammar is rule of language. But Language came first. Grammar helps people to speak the same language the same way. Grammar is not absolute in language as Formulas in math. So, many times, we can form lines that is more meaningful than following a boring rule of grammar. Cause, Language is beautiful. It helps us to speak with others, understand others, express ourselves. So, we can form sentences that is meaningful enough as sounds good in ear, not particularly followed grammar in a boring way but correct way.

{Grammar বা ব্যাকরণ হল ভাষার নিয়ম। কিন্তু ভাষা প্রথম এসেছিল। Grammar বা ব্যাকরণ মানুষকে একই ভাষায় একইভাবে কথা বলতে সাহায্য করে। গণিতের সূত্র-এর মতো Grammar ই ভাষার সবকিছু নয়। সুতরাং, অনেক সময়, আমরা ব্যাকরণের বিরক্তিকর নিয়ম অনুসরণ করার চেয়ে আরও বেশি অর্থপূর্ণ লাইন তৈরি করতে পারি। কারণ, ভাষা সুন্দর। এটি আমাদের অন্যদের সাথে কথা বলতে, অন্যকে বুঝতে, নিজেকে প্রকাশ করতে সাহায্য করে। সুতরাং, আমরা এমন বাক্য গঠন করতে পারি যেগুলি যথেষ্ট অর্থপূর্ণ এবং কানে ভাল শোনায়, সঠিক ভাবে কিন্তু বিরক্তিকর উপায়ে ব্যাকরণ অনুসরণ না করে।}
