Positive + er = comparative 

Positive + est = superlative

Notice the differences ?


Type 1: (consonant becomes double then "er" or "est" get added)

big → bigger  → biggest

hot  → hotter  → hottest

red  → redder  → reddest


Type 2: ("y" becomes   "i" then "er" or "est" get added)

happy  → happier  → happiest

easy  → easier  → easiest

lazy  → lazier  → laziest

Type 3: (add "r" and "st" only)

Superlative Degree : 

Iron is the most useful metal. 

Comparative Degree:

Iron is more useful than any other metal.

Positive Degree:

No other metal is as useful as Iron.


NUMBER 2 : 

Superlative Degree : 

Kolkata is one of the largest cities in India,

Comparative Degree : 

Kolkata is larger than most other cities in India.

Positive Degree:

Very Few cities in India are as large as Kolkata.

3. He is the best striker in the world. (Superlative)

- He is better than any other striker in the world. (Comparative)

- No other striker in the world is so good as Robinho. (Positive)

4. Netaji is one of the greatest leaders of India. (Superlative)

- Netaji is greater than most other leaders of India. (Comparative)

- Very few leaders of India is as great as Netaji. (Positive)

5. Some singers are as great as Manna Dey. (Positive)

- Manna Dey is not greater than some other singers. (Comparative)

- Manna Dey is not the greatest of all singers. (Superlative)

6. The Victoria Memorial Hall is less magnificent than the Taj Mahal. (Comparative)
