"As You Like It" by William Shakespeare SHORT SUMMARY :
In a duchy of France, a usurper exiled its rightful Duke and seized power for himself. The Duke’s daughter, Rosalind, was allowed to remain in the palace at the request of the usurper’s own daughter, Celia.
One day, a wrestling match took place between a practised wrestler and a young man. Everyone assumed the young man would perish, and both Rosalind and Celia begged him not to participate. But to everyone’s surprise, he won—and revealed that he was Orlando, the youngest son of Sir Rowland de Boys. Upon hearing Orlando’s father's name, the Duke grew cold toward him. Yet Rosalind, moved by the competition and his tale of sorrow, quietly fell in love.
Soon, Duke Frederick banished Rosalind. He no longer listened to Celia either. Unwilling to let her sister go alone, Celia decided to accompany Rosalind. Disguised as a boy named “Ganymede,” Rosalind fled to the Forest of Arden with Celia, who assumed the alias “Aliena.” Exhausted and starving, they eventually found a kind villager who helped them buy a cottage and a flock of sheep, and they settled into their new life in disguise.
Meanwhile, Orlando was being mistreated by his elder brother, Oliver, who deprived him of both education and inheritance. At first, Oliver tried to kill him through the wrestling match. Failing that, he planned to burn Orlando alive. But Adam, Orlando’s loyal servant, overheard the brutal plot and helped him escape into the forest. There, Orlando discovered the banished Duke, who welcomed him once he realized Orlando was the son of his old friend.
In the forest, Orlando wrote love poems to Rosalind and carved them into tree trunks. Disguised as Ganymede, Rosalind found the poems and began speaking to Orlando, offering to "cure" him of his lovesickness. To do so, she insisted that Orlando woo Ganymede as if he were Rosalind—unaware he was actually speaking to her the whole time.
Later, Orlando saved Oliver from a snake and a lioness. Witnessing this act of heroism, Oliver was filled with remorse for the pain he had caused his brother. When he visited the home of Ganymede and Aliena, his story stirred Celia—still in disguise—and she fell in love with him. Oliver and Celia decided to marry, and Rosalind chose to wed Orlando.
On the wedding day, Rosalind revealed her true identity, leading to a joyous reunion with her father. In the end, Rosalind married Orlando, and Celia married Oliver. That same day brought even more good news: Duke Frederick renounced the throne and chose to live as a hermit, restoring the rightful Duke to power.
